There are a number of key stages within each phase of a public consultation process. The table below sets out what should happen with each one.

Analysis and assessment of consultation feedback

Reviewing feedback from all consultees to understand the key themes/issues.

  • Assess feedback received
  • Collate into themes and actions to provide update to the project
  • Issue a consultation summary  update newsletter to stakeholders and the public

Amending the scheme, if feasible, in response to consultation responses.

  • Commit to undertaking further work to develop the design and incorporate any appropriate mitigation measures
  • Review the need for further consultation
  • Compile an FAQ or Responses to Issues Raised document

Reporting back on changes made to the scheme

There may be a requirement to provide an update on changes to the scheme prior to another round of formal consultation.

  • Update letter/leaflet
  • Update project web page
  • Drop-in sessions
  • Meetings with councillors and key stakeholders

Most schemes will require more than one phase of consultation. Always allow enough time in a consultation programme between each phase for feedback to be properly evaluated and taken on board.
